Cheez-Its are well-loved snacks, great to have around while watching ball games on television, embarking on hours-long movie marathons, playing board games with the family or lounging on the sofa while reading a good book. Cheez-Its are definitely addicting. Once you’ve opened a pack and placed it in front of your kids, you might be surprised to find the Cheez-Its gone in just a matter of minutes. If you find your pantry fresh out of these tasty treats, why not make some yourself? Here’s how:
In a large bowl, mix together 8 ounces of shredded cheddar cheese, a half teaspoon of salt and 4 tablespoons of softened unsalted butter. Add in a cup of all-purpose flour and mix everything together forming fluffy and clumpy mixture. Then, while the mixer is still running, trickle in enough ice water a little at a time to make a soft dough.
Divide the dough in two, form each into a disk and then cover them both completely in plastic wrap. Place them in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Afterwards, place the dough on a floured surface and roll them out into about an 1/8-inch thickness. Using a fluted pastry cutter, cut the dough into approximately 1-inch squares. Place the squares onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Using a toothpick, make a hole at the center of each square. Then sprinkle a little salt on the squares before placing them in a pre-heated 375-degree F oven. Bake the squares for about 7 to 10 minutes or until they have puffed up and the edges begin to brown. Allow them to cool for a bit before eating.
These homemade Cheez-Its are as yummy and flavorsome as the store-bought kind. Ask your kids to help you when you whip some up. They will love the thought of creating their own snacks from scratch.
